Maarten studied Biomedical Sciences in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 2008. During his studies, he spent 6 months in the lab of Prof. dr. J.D. Molkentin at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA under the supervision of dr. J.H. van Berlo to work on the transcription factor GATA6 in cardiac development. After his return to the Netherlands, he spent 6 months in the lab of Prof. dr. L.J. de Windt under supervision of dr. H. el Azzouzi, working on microRNAs in cardiac metabolism, for which he was supported by a dr. Dekker Student Fellowship from the Dutch Heart Foundation. He then moved to the lab of Prof. dr. Y.M. Pinto to finish his Master’s Degree, which he obtained in 2011. Simultaneously, he started his PhD to investigate RNA-binding proteins in the heart under the supervision of Prof. dr. Y.M. Pinto and dr. E.E. Creemers, for which he was supported by an AMC PhD fellowship. His PhD studies culminated in his thesis entitled "RNA splicing in the heart; changing parts and performance". He then moved to Heidelberg, Germany, to work as a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Prof. dr. J. Backs. In 2022, he was awarded with a Junior Research Group at the Innovationcampus Region Rhein Neckar.
